Common Measles (Rubeola): When to Take It Seriously

Measles is a highly contagious viral infection that usually causes fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a rash. While many people recover, measles can sometimes lead to serious complications.

Seek Urgent Medical Care If You Have:

🚨 Difficulty breathing or rapid breathing

🚨 High fever above 39.5°C (103°F) that does not improve

🚨 Severe dehydration

  • Very little urine
  • Dry mouth
  • Extreme weakness

🚨 Confusion, excessive sleepiness, or seizures

🚨 Severe headache with vomiting

🚨 Chest pain or persistent cough

  • May indicate pneumonia

🚨 Ear pain or discharge from the ear

  • May indicate an ear infection

🚨 Rash with unusual bleeding or bruising

🚨 Symptoms worsening after initial improvement

Higher-Risk Groups

Take measles especially seriously in:

  • Infants under 1 year
  • Pregnant women
  • Adults over 20 years
  • People with weakened immune systems
  • Malnourished children

Possible Serious Complications

  • Pneumonia
  • Severe dehydration
  • Ear infections
  • Encephalitis (brain inflammation)
  • Vision problems
  • Death in severe cases

Prevention

✅ Measles vaccination (MMR vaccine) is the best protection.

✅ Stay isolated from others if infected to prevent spread.

Simple Awareness Message

"Measles is not just a rash. High fever, breathing difficulty, dehydration, confusion, or seizures require immediate medical attention."

If you would like, I can also create a Tamil-English measles awareness poster for Perambalur Polyclinic Medical Centre with your phone numbers (8148678678 / 9597292678).
